WMO REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON IMPLEMENTATION OF WEATHER- AND CLIMATE-RELATED SERVICES IN THE LEAST DEVELOPED COUNTRIES (LDCs) IN ASIA THIMPHU, BHUTAN FROM 9-11 SEPTEMBER 2014

 

 The Regional Workshop on Implementation of Weather and Climate related services in the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Asia is organised by Department of Hydro Met Services and World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) from 9-11 September 2014 at Migmar Hotel in Thimphu, Bhutan. The WMO workshop held in Bhutan is very first of its kind. The workshop was started with opening remarks from Director, DHMS, MoEA, Chief Guest, Dasho Secretary, MoEA and followed by WMO.

High Socio-Economic benefits from Improved Hydrological and Meteorological forecasts and warnings in Bhutan(Press release)

 

 Currently, an investment of 1$ in Hydro-Meteorological services produces a benefit of 5.5$ while considering only two important economic sectors (viz. Hydropower and Tourism). If other socio- economic sectors are also taken into account, the cost-benefit ratio would be much higher. This was the major finding of the Socio-economic study on the improved hydro-meteorological services in Bhutan carried under the project SHSB. The Study also suggests that due to rapid modernization, by 2025, the cost-benefit ratio would increase to very high level up to 1: 8-9.

BHUTAN MONSOON OUTLOOK 2014 Press Release

 

 A monsoon forecast from the Department of Hydro-Met Services, MoEA forecasts that this year the expected start of monsoon is in the second week of June. Normal for Bhutan is the mean total rainfall for 18 years from 1996-2013. The annual total rainfall is forecasted to be normal to below normal. The monsoon rainfall (June-Sept) is forecasted to be 5.1% below the normal. Monthly rainfall for June and July is forecasted to be below normal and for Aug and Sept is above normal. Overall, the monsoon rains (June-Sept) is predicted to be slightly more than last year.
